City meets annual Organics Target again!

The Sustainability Division is happy to report that the City exceeded its SB 1383 annual organic product procurement target for 2024. The State law establishes purchasing goals for each California jurisdiction based on population. To meet the City’s assigned target of 2,818 tons of compost by the end of 2024, staff used CalRecycle grant funding to offer free compost weekly through a partnership with the New Roots Farm Community Garden located at 485 Regatta Lane. In addition, the Division announced the “Compost for All” program, offering free home delivery of compost to residential applicants. Within a few weeks, the City met the required target.

The Sustainability Team will continue to offer both compost give-away programs in 2025, when the City’s organics target will increase to 4,335 tons. To help achieve this higher target, the Sustainability Division and the Parks Department have purchased compost spreading equipment for use on City properties.

Compost has several beneficial properties, including retaining nutrients, keeping soil moist, drought tolerant and fire resistant; and it even fights climate change by pulling carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere! Finally, most of the procured compost was produced right here in Yolo County from organic waste collected in West Sacramento and neighboring communities.
